The UPS plane that crashed near Louisville on Tuesday night has left at least nine people dead and the loss could grow, according to Kentucky’s governor. Gov. Andy Beshear warned on X that more than a dozen families have said loved ones are still missing.
At a reunification center, Beshear said 16 families had asked for help finding relatives who could not be located. He also said a “significant” search and rescue effort began after midnight and will keep working this morning. The governor’s office will give a press update at 11:30 a.m. Eastern.
UPS Flight 2976 exploded about 13 minutes after takeoff from Muhammed Ali International Airport, around 5:15 p.m. The cargo plane carried three crew members and 50,000 gallons of jet fuel. Federal Aviation Administration data shows the aircraft lifted off with a wing on fire, flipped onto its side, and crashed hard, releasing a massive fireball.
“We are terribly saddened” by the accident, UPS said in a statement. “We are working closely with the National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Administration, and local authorities on the response and investigation.” UPS also offered heartfelt thoughts to all affected.
The crash is still under investigation by the NTSB and the FAA, while emergency crews clear debris, burn oil, and search for survivors or missing crew members. The death toll may rise as more families report missing loved ones and rescue teams continue their search in the Louisville area.
