Curtis Sliwa, the former WABC shock‑jock and Republican candidate for New York City mayor, has publicly denied calls to drop out of the race. In a press conference on Tuesday, he told reporters, “I am not dropping out, under no circumstances.” He added that he has already been asked for money to quit, but he refused.
The rejection comes a day after John Catsimatidis, the powerful grocery‑store billionaire who bankrolls Sliwa’s weekday radio show and who has pushed for a unified Republican front, urged the former host to step aside.
Catsimatidis specifically asked Sliwa to back former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, hoping the two could combine forces to block socialist challenger Zohran Mamdani.
Sliwa’s campaign sits in a crowded field that is already calling for a single candidate to defeat Mamdani. County chairs and other GOP leaders say “Republican voters will not vote for Andrew Cuomo.”
The message is clear: Curtis Sliwa is the candidate who will bring “safety, affordability, and common sense” back to city hall and defeat the “radical left” on November 4th.
The split in the Republican bloc is now more visible. While Catsimatidis provides most of the campaign funds and sees Sliwa as a vehicle to carry the city’s anti‑socialist message, other Republicans—most notably Andrea Catsimatidis, chair of the New York GOP—continue to support Sliwa. Together, they cast doubt on Cuomo’s chances in a race where voters are split along party and ideological lines.
As the campaign heats up, Sliwa remains firm: he will stay in the mayoral contest. His supporters expect to keep that resolve in the face of mounting pressure from party leaders seeking to unify behind a single ticket that can stop Mamdani’s bid for City Hall.
