Melania Trump told reporters at the White House on October 11 that eight Ukrainian children were happily reunited with their families in the past 24 hours. The children had fled their homes because of the Russia‑Ukraine war and had been living in Russia for months.
The First Lady said she sent a “peace letter” to Russian President Vladimir Putin last August. She said Putin responded positively, opening a channel for the children’s safe return. “We now have an open line of communication with the Putin team,” she added. The letter urged leaders to protect children worldwide and to give every child hope.
According to Mar 39, the First Lady’s representatives have worked with Russian officials for three months, holding back‑channel talks in good faith. The goal: to bring families together and put an end to the children’s separation from their loved ones.
U.S. President Donald Trump delivered the letter in person to Putin before a summit in Alaska, after which Putin read it in front of both delegations. The message focused on the innocence of children and the duty of leaders to safeguard their future.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised Melania Trump for raising the issue of abducted Ukrainian children. The White House said the reunions were a small but meaningful step toward easing the humanitarian impact of the war.
