Elite liberal arts school Amherst College held ‘disgusting’ orientation performance — where students mimicked sex acts

At Amherst College, a cluster of students said they were made to endure an “excruciating” orientation ritual that involved staged sexual acts, loud moaning, and condoms being tossed like confetti over the audience. Footage released by the Washington Free Beacon shows first‑year students acting out explicit scenes, mumbling and moving beneath blankets during a show that many claim is obligatory for all newcomers.

“I almost left just ten minutes in,” said Isabella Niemi, a junior. “I’m not the type to break rules or skip mandatory events, but it was so repulsive that it almost pushed me to walk away.”

The production, titled “Voices of the Class,” is officially sanctioned and funded by the college, which can pull in more than $90,000 each year. Reporters say the script borrows lines from the students’ own admission essays, taken out of context to create a dramatic performance.

While some are outraged, Amherst’s administration insists the skits serve a purpose. Amanda Vann, the director of health and wellbeing, explained that the scenes are part of a broader strategy to promote sexual respect, health, and communication on campus. “We’re encouraging conversations about difficult topics—from sexual health and communication to harm reduction and self‑care—by presenting them in a relatable, engaging format,” Vann added. “These performances help students build the skills and awareness needed to care for themselves, support one another, and contribute to a healthy, respectful community.” She noted that this tradition has continued for 25 years.

Nonetheless, certain students feel the current iteration went too far. Junior John Collier said, “I understand that Amherst is trying to remove the taboo surrounding sex on campus, but this has gone way too far.” He added, “The way it’s forced in our faces does the exact opposite.”
