Joe Borelli, the former minority leader on New York City’s Council, told Fox News that Republican voters in the mayoral race should back former governor Andrew Cuomo instead of challenger Curtis Sliwa.
“I’m not a fan of Andrew Cuomo,” Borelli said on the “Saturday in America” show. “But I don’t want to light a vote on fire for Curtis Sliwa.”
The ex‑Councilman made the comment as Democrats prepare for the upcoming November 4 election. Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, defeated Cuomo in last year’s Democratic primary. Cuomo is now running on the independent “Fight & Deliver” line, while Sliwa’s campaign struggles to gain traction.
Borelli compared the candidates: “Do you want someone with their foot on the gas pedal for socialism, or do you want someone who can step on the brake when needed?” He added that voting for Sliwa could split the Republican vote and help Mamdani win.
Sliwa’s polling numbers are low. Borelli said the candidate is drawing only half the support he had in 2021—when he almost lost the race. He warned Republicans that “just because a candidate is ineffective doesn’t mean we should waste our vote.”
Borelli, who served as a Staten Island councilman for 10 years and later the GOP minority leader, left public office earlier this year to start a lobbying firm before he was term‑limited.
Curtis Sliwa has not responded to the accusations. The campaign declined to comment. The mayoral race remains tight, with Democrats and Republicans vying for control of the city’s future.
