First child victim of Stockton birthday party mass shooting ID’d as Amari Peterson: ‘My baby was innocent’
A 14‑year‑old boy named Amari Peterson was attending a birthday gathering in a Stockton banquet hall on November 29 when gunfire suddenly erupted, leaving him, a 21‑year‑old, and two children aged 8 and 9 dead.
According to his grieving mother, Kim Peterson, his presence at that particular place and moment was “at the wrong place at the wrong time.”
She described Amari as a “loving and caring boy who loved sports, including basketball and football,” and lamented, “I’m just lost for words.
Just pray for me, my family, his friends, everybody that came across him. My baby was loved.” The tragedy has prompted memorials for the victims and leaves the community in shock.
