A former NFL running back turned high‑school football coach has been taken into custody in Nashville after a prostitution sting that allegedly involved a minor.
Jay Graham, 50, was arrested Wednesday when he posted money for sex on a fake escort site and then turned up at a hotel to pay the undercover officer posing as the girl.
Police say Graham agreed to pay $120 for sex, even after the “girl” warned that she was underage. He was booked on the spot and now faces two federal charges: patronizing prostitution with a minor and solicitation of a minor for aggravated statutory rape. The bond is set at $45,000.
Graham’s story starts on the football field. He played for the University of Tennessee from 1993 to 1996, then spent five years in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers. In 2013 he helped Florida State win a national title as an assistant coach.
After a long coaching career that included stints at the University of Tennessee and East Tennessee State, Graham was hired in March to coach the running backs at Centennial High School in Franklin, Tennessee. That Wednesday, the Williamson County Schools district fired him from his coaching role and barred him from the campus after learning of the sting.
He remains only suspended as a teacher, because a different process applies to educators. A district spokesperson said the authorities had not found any risk to Centennial students or families.
The sting also resulted in the arrest of two other men, 46 and 20, who are facing the same kind of charges. The Metropolitan Nashville Police have kept the investigation going as they work to determine the full scope of the operation.
