Jim Jordan, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has formally requested that former Special Counsel Jack Smith appear for a deposition and answer questions about the investigation that ultimately led to two federal prosecutions of former President Trump.
In a letter that accompanied the subpoena issued on Wednesday, Jordan explained: “Due to your service as Special Counsel, the Committee believes that you possess information that is vital to its oversight of this matter.” Jordan (R‑Ohio) had previously called on Smith in October to voluntarily provide answers and key documents to his panel.
Smith has defended his work on the matter, arguing that a jury would have found the former president guilty of unlawfully conspiring to overturn the 2020 election results if he had not been re‑elected to a second, non‑consecutive term last year.
The subpoena requires Smith to attend a deposition on Dec. 17 and to provide the requested documents by Dec. 12.
