Exclusive | Andy Dick reveals the deadly drug he believes almost killed him after OD on Hollywood street
Andy Dick has finally explained what almost killed him after he collapsed on a Hollywood street, sharing his story with The Post in a private phone call. The comedian, who is also a convicted sex offender, wanted to clarify the details after he previously told TMZ that crack cocaine was the cause of his fall on concrete steps near a liquor store.
Dick told reporters that paramedics told him he had likely smoked fentanyl. “It has to be [fentanyl]. That’s the only thing that can kill you that quickly, like I just dropped,” he said. He added that just before the overdose he’d “snuck away” from friends to meet a stranger who was offering drugs. “I ran away from them to talk to a guy that was waving me over. I was like, ‘oh this guy probably has drugs,’ and I, I love drugs,” he recalled. “I don’t wanna get into exactly what happened, but I just dropped.”
Video footage captured Dick’s face and hands turning blue as he slid forward on a step outside a liquor store. He was later laid flat on his back by friends, according to Shawn Harrell, a 48‑year‑old security guard at the Highland Liquor strip mall where the incident occurred. The ordeal lasted about ten minutes, and although the responders used more than one dose of Narcan—an antidote for opioid overdoses—Dick was not taken to a hospital. Harrell told The Post that they were repeatedly spraying Narcan and tapping him on the chest, trying to keep him awake as he was unresponsive.
In a brief comment about his earlier claim that crack cocaine caused the over‑dose, Dick admitted he was joking around, saying, “I jokingly said a little crack every now and then, not gonna kill anybody, but it killed me. It killed me. I died, you know, my lips turned purple.”
