Andy Dick turned blue during apparent OD, says strip mall security guard: ‘I thought he passed away’

Andy Dick was witnessed by onlookers who initially believed the former comedian had died right before their eyes after what appeared to be an overdose on Hollywood Boulevard, one of Los Angeles’s most iconic tourist spots.
During the incident, his skin flushed blue and he fell forward while seated on a storefront step outside a liquor store. Friends eventually turned him onto his back, and Shawn Harrell, who works as a security guard for the strip mall where the episode occurred, recounted the chaos.
“I thought he’d passed away. They started spraying Narcan and tapping him on the chest. They were trying to keep him awake because he was non‑responsive. They used more than one Narcan,” Harrell told the NY Post.
“The paramedics came. People were crowding around him so I didn’t want to be part of the commotion. I stood back and watched them do what they did.” Narcan, a medication commonly used to counter opioid overdoses, was administered during the scene.
The entire ordeal lasted roughly ten minutes, and according to Harrell, the paramedics did not transfer Dick to a hospital. After the treatment, the comedian was back to his normal self—standing, looking around, and walking away as if nothing had occurred.
Harrell admitted he recognized Dick’s face from his many comedy shows, but was uncertain of his identity at first.
This episode follows a string of troubling events involving the former Hollywood talent, beginning with a TMZ report about the recent overdose. Weeks prior, Dick had been spotted on Hollywood Boulevard, sitting on the pavement with a cup in hand, speaking in a slurred manner.
Throughout the past year, he has faced several legal challenges, culminating in multiple arrests by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office. In a later conversation with TMZ, he expressed relief at being alive and said he was doing okay.
