In Bellingham, Washington, a quiet‑looking apartment that cost about $2,000 a month turned out to be the home of an Afghan national blamed for killing two National Guard troops. Local residents told the Post that U.S. authorities stormed the flat in a Wednesday raid.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, would often be seen playing Call of Duty in the bare apartment he shared with his hijab‑wearing wife, according to neighbors. The modest room held no beds—just “some couch cushions they would sleep on,” the locals said—yet the couple never made a peep, and Lakanwal spoke little English. A local remarked, “Bellingham is very liberal. Very welcoming. Very diverse. Very open.”
The man arrived in the U.S. in 2021 via the “Operation Allies Welcome” program and later opened fire about 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, just blocks from the White House, wounding two Guard soldiers. Official statements call the event a “targeted attack,” claiming Lakanwal drove coast‑to‑coast from Washington state to carry it out.
Victims Sarah Beckstrom (20) and Andrew Wolfe (24) are critically injured; Beckstrom’s father told the New York Times her wound is “mortal.” The FBI is still probing a motive. Lakanwal, who the CIA said had ties to an elite counter‑terrorism “Unit Zero” in Afghanistan, faces at least three counts of assault with intent to kill and possession of a weapon.
