In Miami on Thursday, Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and former national security adviser Jared Kushner will sit down with Ukraine’s chief negotiator to go over the latest Russian demands that came up during a five‑hour meeting in Moscow. The discussion follows President Vladimir Putin’s Tuesday dismissal of the Geneva‑drafted 19‑point peace proposal that Kyiv had been working on. After Moscow, U.S. officials asked Ukraine’s national‑security adviser Rustem Umerov to join them in Florida, a welcome he accepted.
According to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, the Russians and Americans hashed out four different versions of a peace plan—none of which matched the Moscow‑leaning 28‑point suggestion first reported by Axios. “No compromise option has yet been found,” he told reporters, adding that while “Some of the American proposals appear more or less acceptable. They do, nevertheless, require further discussion,” and that wording the U.S. has offered “not suitable for us.” In short, the work continues and remains “one of the most crucial issues.”
The Thursday briefing came after a failed attempt to bring Witkoff and Kushner to Kiev for a quick debrief before they returned to Washington. A senior U.S. official said the original plan was never confirmed and that, with the timing constraints of the Moscow talks, a stop in Europe was ultimately “not feasible.” He noted that the two officials had already briefed President Trump and the Ukrainians following their meeting with the Russians.
