On October 23, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stopped two semi‑trailer trucks at the Laredo Bridge 2 Port of Entry in Texas. The trucks were heading south into Mexico when inspection officers noticed irregularities along the trailer walls.
A second, closer look revealed false compartments packed with a massive cache: about 400 firearms—including rifles, handguns and high‑capacity magazines—plus thousands of rounds of ammunition.
ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents in Laredo quickly responded. They arrested the father, Emilio Ramirez‑Cortez, a lawful permanent resident, and his son, Edgar Ramirez‑Diaz, a U.S. citizen. Both men face federal firearms‑smuggling charges and have been handed over to U.S. Marshals for an initial court appearance.
The weapons are believed to have been shipped into Mexico, where drug cartels use them to fuel ongoing violence. “We’re seeing a new wave of guns quietly moving across the border,” said ICE after the arrest. The agency said it will continue the investigation and that additional suspects or charges could emerge.
