Congresswoman Ashley Hinson, the Republican from Iowa, is pushing a new bill aimed at easing the financial burden on pregnant women. The “Supporting Healthy Pregnancy Act” would let a mother seek support from the father before the baby is even born.
Hinson’s proposal would require states to set up systems where the biological father must pay at least 50 % of any out‑of‑pocket costs related to pregnancy and delivery—including health‑insurance premiums. The bill specifically bars abortion expenses from the list of costs that can be claimed. Importantly, mothers must request the payments before the father is legally bound to provide them.
Right now, most states let single moms obtain a child‑support order only after the child is born, which means many women still shoulder pregnancy costs on their own.
“This is just one piece of a larger set of bills I’ve introduced to help women through maternity,” Hinson told Fox News Digital. Another measure she’s filed would oblige higher‑education campuses to clearly spell out what rights and resources pregnant students have, offering alternatives beyond abortion. A bipartisan effort she co‑chairs with Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet of Michigan would broaden access to midwives and provide training, especially in underserved areas.
“I’m a mom on a mission to make life easier for my fellow moms and families,” Hinson said. “Strong families make a strong nation, and we should work together to support the parents and women who are building America’s future.” As a mom of two, I’m proud to be a leader in that fight for Iowa and for families nationwide.
