A Florida Republican says public universities should name a campus road after slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk. If the bill passes, the state could withhold funding from schools that ignore the order.
State Rep. Kevin Steele filed HB 113 in the House of Representatives. The proposal would give the 40 state‑run colleges 90 days to rename a road “Charlie James Kirk Drive,” “Road,” or “Boulevard,” whatever the current name is. The bill explicitly says that campuses who fail to comply will lose a chunk of state money.
The bill is part of a wave of attempts to honor Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, who was shot during a debate at Utah Valley University on September 10. The incident sparked a national debate and drew attention from the highest levels of Republican leadership, including former President Trump.
Steele said he wants to keep Kirk’s legacy alive “through generations of students that will attend our schools and will be faced with many differing ideas.” He posted the brief on X (formerly Twitter) to explain his goals.
Other lawmakers are also pushing for memorials. Earlier this month, Rep. Juan Porras filed HB 33 to name part of a road near Florida International University “Charlie Kirk Memorial Avenue.” Meanwhile, a Utah representative has introduced a proposal to rename Salt Lake City’s Harvey Milk Boulevard after Kirk. Even in Congress, some Republicans want Kirk’s name on silver dollar coins.
The effort is controversial. Critics say the move forces schools to honor a figure who never earned a college degree and whose death has become a flashpoint for political tension. The debate over whether public institutions should be compelled to rename roads continues as lawmakers and citizens weigh the balance between memorializing individuals and preserving community choice.
