A Florida man was taken into custody this week after police say he illegally harvested hundreds of pounds of avocados from a fenced grove near Miami.
Edel Perez, 29, was stopped by deputies at about 3:10 a.m. on Monday when they saw him, dressed entirely in black, picking ripe fruit inside the property. The grove was surrounded by a fence and bore a “No Trespassing” sign. After the alleged theft, Perez left the site with bags of avocados that weighed roughly 400 pounds and were later found in his Mercedes‑Benz, along with loose fruit in the trunk.
When questioned, Perez told officers he was unemployed and intended to sell the stolen produce so he could afford Christmas presents for his two children. The arrest affidavit estimates the value of the stolen fruit at $800.
Perez now faces charges of trespassing on an agricultural site and third‑degree grand theft.
