In Chandigarh, the Punjab Congress kicked off a signature drive on Wednesday to fight what they call “vote theft” or “vote-chori.” This is part of a bigger nationwide push to collect 5 crore signatures and hand them over to the Election Commission by October 15.
The Punjab team has set a bold goal: gathering at least 15 lakh signatures from locals by October 10. State party chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring says they’re confident they’ll hit that mark, tapping into widespread anger over election rigging claims.
Adding some excitement, two prominent figures jumped ship to join the Congress—senior Akali Dal leader and ex-minister Anil Joshi, plus civil society activist Deepak Lamba. Party general secretary Bhupesh Baghel, the former Chhattisgarh chief minister, gave them a warm welcome at a media briefing. “Their addition will make our Punjab unit even stronger,” Baghel said.
Baghel didn’t hold back on the BJP, calling them “fully exposed” after Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi dropped solid evidence of vote manipulation. He pointed out how desperate the BJP seems, with one of their spokespersons even threatening to shoot Gandhi. To ramp up awareness, the Punjab Congress plans a statewide yatra against vote theft, touring every district to rally people.
Warring echoed the sentiment, noting that Punjab folks are fed up with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. “People see how AAP has wrecked the state in every way—they’re ready for change,” he said. Congress legislative leader Partap Singh Bajwa agreed, welcoming Joshi and Lamba. He stressed that not just politicians, but everyday citizens, intellectuals, and thought leaders are flocking to the Congress, believing it’s the only party that can pull Punjab out of the AAP mess.
Bajwa also slammed the 2024 elections, saying a fair vote count would have limited the BJP to just 160 seats. Joshi, speaking at the event, thanked the Congress brass for the opportunity. “In these tough times, I’m convinced only the Congress can guide Punjab toward real progress and growth,” he added.
This signature campaign against vote theft highlights growing calls for election integrity, drawing in new allies to bolster the opposition in Punjab.
