G7 countries condemn attempts by Iran to target political opponents in other countries

G7 nations have come together to slam Iran’s growing efforts to target and silence its critics abroad. On Friday, leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US, and the European Union—along with G7 associates—issued a strong statement through the G7 Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM). They condemned what they call “transnational repression” by Iranian intelligence services, including plots to kill, kidnap, and harass political opponents in other countries.

The G7 RRM highlighted recent warnings from allies like Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the UK, and the US. These countries pointed out Iran’s disturbing pattern of crossing borders to undermine other nations’ sovereignty. Iranian agents have been accused of stealing personal data from journalists, stirring up divisions in societies, and even intimidating Jewish communities. “We stand with our international partners whose people have faced these threats from Iran,” the statement said.

The G7 RRM, set up to fight foreign interference, builds on a recent leaders’ declaration against transnational repression. Their goal? Protect national sovereignty, keep communities safe, and shield individuals from foreign governments trying to intimidate or harm them on home soil.

This isn’t just talk—recent reports back it up. A Canadian public inquiry earlier this year named Iran as a key player in foreign interference, especially targeting Iranian-origin residents in Canada. In January 2024, the US Department of Justice exposed a chilling plot where two Canadians allegedly planned assassinations in Maryland for Iranian intelligence. The targets? A man and woman, including an Iranian defector.

As tensions rise over Iran’s transnational repression, the G7’s united front sends a clear message: such cross-border attacks won’t be tolerated.
