Gabrielle rapidly intensifies into a Category 3 hurricane in the Atlantic

Hurricane Gabrielle is making headlines in the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, powering up fast as it spins over the central subtropical Atlantic. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) report that the storm has rapidly intensified into a major Category 3 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds hitting 120 mph and even stronger gusts.

This marks Gabrielle as the second hurricane of the season after some early struggles to organize. Right now, it’s churning about 180 miles southeast of Bermuda, heading north at 10 mph. Experts expect it to keep gaining strength as it swings east of the island, possibly reaching Category 4 status with winds up to 130 mph. By Wednesday, though, it should start weakening.

No direct landfall looks likely for Bermuda, but the storm’s swells are already battering the island with showers and gusty winds that could stick around for a few days. Those same swells have reached the U.S. East Coast from North Carolina northward, plus Atlantic Canada, and they’ll likely cause dangerous surf and rip currents through midweek. Beachgoers, stay alert— these conditions can turn life-threatening in a hurry.

Rapid intensification like this happens when a storm’s winds jump at least 35 mph in 24 hours, and Gabrielle nailed that milestone. The NHC is watching closely as it moves northeast faster by Tuesday.

Beyond Gabrielle, two other spots in the Atlantic could brew trouble soon. First up: a tropical wave in the central tropical Atlantic, halfway between the Lesser Antilles and Cabo Verde Islands. It’s kicking up showers and thunderstorms, and conditions are turning favorable. The NHC gives it a low shot at development in the next two days but a high chance over the next week. A tropical depression might form by midweek as it drifts west-northwest across the central Atlantic.

The second area sits east of the Lesser Antilles, with disorganized showers and storms. Things look only slightly supportive for slow growth as it heads west or west-northwest. By week’s end, it could slow, turn northwest, and spawn a depression over the southwestern Atlantic or near the Bahamas. Odds are low for the next two days and medium for the full week.

Keep an eye on NHC updates for the latest on Hurricane Gabrielle and these potential tropical threats— the Atlantic season is just heating up.
