California Governor Gavin Newsom said he had never doubted former President Joe Biden’s brainpower to run the country—except after a single California fundraiser in June that left many people nervous.
At the gala in Los Angeles, Biden missed recognizing Hollywood star George Clooney, who co‑hosted the event. The moment made the actor “shaken to the core,” according to a book co‑authored by CNN’s Jake Tapper. Newsom shared that the fundraiser was the only time he felt Biden might be slipping.
During a recent interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Newsom told reporters, “I never had that.” He added that the fundraiser, along with Biden’s two trips to Europe in the same week, gave him pause. “We were all a little taken aback,” he said.
Shortly after, Biden faced a disastrous debate with former President Donald Trump. The poor performance helped push the Democrats into a decision to withdraw the congressman from the 2024 race.
Newsom pressed on, describing how he praised Biden’s accomplishments—including the CHIPS and Science Act and COVID‑19 relief—as evidence of a president “who can get things done.” He claimed he had spoken to Biden recently “a few hours ago” and praised his leadership.
When asked if he publicly raised concerns about Biden’s readiness for the presidency, Newsom replied that it was not his role to question the former president’s mental state in front of the nation. “My job was to let [Biden] have the space,” he said. He avoided answering whether he thought Biden was fit for another four‑year term after his decision to drop out of the race.
The governor also hinted at a possible 2028 run. Asked why he might consider the presidency, Newsom said he wasn’t definitely planning to run but would do so if “something happens.” He slammed politicians who “lie” and implied that any president who does so deserves public scrutiny.
Newsom has long been seen as a leading California Democrat, and his comments reflect the broader tension among Democrats as they weigh Biden’s future political ambitions and the electoral possibilities in 2024 and beyond.
