Gavin Newsom roasted for claiming hair ‘literally burst’ into flames during Calif. wildfire
Liar, liar — hair on fire?
That’s the meme‑ish claim that’s been spiraling across social media after Gov. Gavin Newsom told a renewed interview that his trademark slick‑back hair actually burst into flames while he was touring the damage of the Palisades Fire in Los Angeles earlier this year.
“I was up there in the hills with these guys when we all turned around — when my hair literally burst. There’s a video of it,” Newsom said. “And they threw me in the car and a guy hits my hair, and throws me in the car and says, ‘Get the fuck out of here!’”
The Palisades Fire ignited early on January 7 in the Santa Monica Mountains and ultimately consumed more than 23,000 acres before CAL FIRE declared it fully contained. An official damage assessment blamed arson and reported that the blaze killed 12 people, injured four, destroyed 6,837 structures, and damaged a further 973. Newsom declared a state of emergency on the day the fire broke out.
No response came from the governor’s office when reporters asked for details about when and where his hair supposedly caught fire. Newsom made the comments during a July appearance on the Shawn Ryan Show, but the story’s bizarre nature has now sparked a fresh wave of humor—especially after Newsom posted a “testicle‑crushing” sitting pose at a recent New York Times DealBook Summit.
Kevin Dalton, a frequent poster on X, even produced an AI‑generated clip that shows Newsom’s hair blazing before he hops into a limo. Meanwhile, the Orange County Republican Party tweeted: “Newsom claims that his hair caught on fire and there’s video of it? Release the Newsom Hair Files!”
Ross Gerber, a longtime resident of the Palisades who narrowly avoided having his home destroyed, said he was present when the fire started and finds Newsom’s account hard to believe. “Where are the videos? He should have them on his phone, because I was there,” Gerber told reporters. “It’s infuriating to me that I almost died fighting the fire near my house.” He added that the governor’s command post was set up not far from his home, and emphasized that he “didn’t see him go anywhere near the fire.” “This is absurd,” Gerber concluded.
