A prosecutor who stepped in to address the Georgia 2020 election‑interference case against President Trump and more than a dozen associates decided to file for dismissal of all charges on Wednesday, arguing that continuing the case would be “unproductive.” Peter Skandalakis, who nominated himself after the ouster of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and the lack of another willing prosecutor, formally requested that the indictment be dropped for Trump and fourteen co‑defendants. In his 23‑page motion, Skandalakis admitted that the case “is on life support and the decision [on] what to do with it falls on me and me alone” and noted that the proper authority to bring charges would be former special counsel Jack Smith—whose federal version of the Georgia case was dismissed after Trump’s 2024 election.
“If Special Counsel Jack Smith, with all the resources of the federal government at his disposal, after reviewing the evidence in this case and considering the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. United States, along with the years of litigation such a case would inevitably entail, concluded that prosecution would be fruitless,” Skandalakis wrote, “then I too find that, despite the available evidence, pursuing the prosecution of all those involved in State of Georgia v. Donald Trump, et al. on essentially federal grounds would be equally unproductive.”
