Goldman Sachs taps Robert Sobelman — prosecutor on scrapped US corruption case against Eric Adams — to run investigations at bank: sources
Goldman Sachs has announced that it will appoint Robert Sobelman—the high‑profile federal prosecutor who led the corruption investigation against former New York City Mayor Eric Adams before the case was dropped by the Trump administration—as its new chief of investigations, according to The Post.
Sobelman, a 39‑year‑old attorney with a background at Colgate University and Brooklyn Law School, is set to join the David Solomon‑led firm “imminently,” according to a senior source familiar with the deal.
The same source said that his move is part of a broader wave of departures from the Southern District of New York, where he now serves as head of the public‑corruption unit.
The attorney has had a notable career in the federal courthouse in Manhattan. He played a leading role in the prosecutions that resulted in the convictions of a New Jersey state senator and a disgraced New Jersey businessman in 2021.
In 2022, he headed the case that led to the imprisonment of a Hollywood attorney who had once represented a high‑profile pop‑star. And he was the lead prosecutor in the campaign that secured a guilty plea from a former presidential campaign adviser on a fraud charge.
Sobelman’s career also includes a stint on the federal bench in February 2023, when he was confirmed as the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, replacing the previous holder chosen by the Biden administration. He succeeded an interim appointee who had refused to follow a Trump‑era directive to dismiss the Adams corruption case.
While Sobelman has not yet responded publicly to the report, representatives from Goldman have declined to comment. The move comes as the bank looks to bolster its internal investigative resources, with the new chief expected to bring a reputation for rigorous, high‑stakes prosecution to the finance giant.
