Grammy-nominated musician Roderick MacLeod killed by driver with more than 100 arrests

A cherished local musician was fatally struck by a vehicle while walking his dog in Rhode Island. The accident happened early Saturday morning in Hopkinton, when a woman named Shannon Godbout lost control of her car, veered off the road, hit several objects—including two telephone poles—and ultimately collided with 70‑year‑old Roderick MacLeod on the shoulder. Police stated that the crash unfolded around 7:20 a.m. The victim was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

MacLeod—an internationally respected bassist who has earned a Grammy nomination and a spot in the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame—did not survive. His dog, unharmed by the collision, darted back home according to officials.

Investigators found Godbout at the scene with a haul of illegal narcotics and drug‑distribution packaging. She was taken into custody and faces charges of driving endangeringly resulting in death, as well as possession of Schedule I/II substances with intent to distribute—a third‑degree offense. Her extensive criminal record, which includes over a hundred arrests, 82 pending court warrants, and 40 traffic tickets, was also disclosed.

The sheriff’s office will present her to the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office as a criminal violator, and she was scheduled to appear before a justice of the peace.

MacLeod’s career highlights include being inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame in 2012 as part of the Roomful of Blues and receiving a Grammy nod in the 1980s. He recently served as a teaching associate for Brown University and directed the college’s Old‑Time String Band. For 51 years he also volunteered with the New Hackensack Fire Department, ultimately holding the role of Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners for the district when he passed away.

Friends and colleagues remember him as a warm, upbeat talent who could effortlessly master any instrument. One long‑time associate remarked that MacLeod’s skill came so naturally that it never seemed like hard work, and that he always enjoyed collaborating with everyone. Those who knew him will equally recall his cheerful personality and effortless playing style.

Roderick is survived by his wife of almost 47 years, Karen; his daughter, Kate (Manny) Valdivia; and his grandchildren, Mance, Roddy, Ruthanne, and Megan.
