A gunman opened fire on Miami police early Monday after a vehicle that had been abandoned in the middle of a street was found “riddled with bullets.” The shooting set a police standoff in motion that is still ongoing.
Police responded to a 7 a.m. report about an abandoned car. When they arrived the vehicle was heavily shot up. A few minutes later shots rang out from a nearby house. Two officers rushed in to help, but the shooter fired and hit one in the knee and the other in the ankle. Both officers are now stable and in good spirits, according to Police Chief Manny Morales.
The suspect has barricaded himself inside the house and the police say the gunman fired again for a brief period. No one else was injured during the exchange. Officers are currently negotiating with the shooter and keep the area cordoned off.
“Neighbors, please stay safe and avoid the area,” Chief Morales told residents in the neighborhood. “We’re putting a safe perimeter in place.”
Law enforcement has not released the shooter’s name, but Morales said the suspect is someone the department has dealt with before. Another person, who may be connected to the scene, has been taken into custody and is being questioned. The police say they are still determining how this other individual became involved.
The incident is adding to a growing number of shooting incidents in Miami-Dade County. Police remain on high alert as they work to resolve the standoff and bring the suspect to justice.
