Ewa Sokola Sues Sister Kaja Over Alleged Defamation
In a new development stemming from the Harvey Weinstein case, cardiologist Ewa Sokola has filed a defamation suit against her younger sister, Kaja Sokola. The lawsuit was submitted Tuesday in a Manhattan federal court and accuses Kaja of making false statements that have harmed Ewa’s medical practice in Wrocław, Poland.
Ewa says her sister’s claims have led to public hatred, shame, ridicule, and ostracism, and have damaged her reputation as a cardiologist. “Ewa Sokola says that her younger sister has made false statements subjecting her to public hatred, shame, contempt, ridicule, ostracism and disgrace in Wrocław, Poland,” the filing states, without specifying an amount of damages.
The dispute follows both sisters’ testimony in Weinstein’s most recent criminal trial. Kaja testified that Weinstein coerced her into oral sex in 2006, while Ewa appeared as a witness in the defense’s case. Kaja later said Ewa’s testimony had weakened her own accusations, a claim that now forms the basis of the defamation claim.
"We are suing for libel and for the impact on my reputation and business," Ewa told reporters. "The statements have cost me referrals and reduced the number of patients and employees at my clinic."
Weinstein, who was found guilty of forcibly performing oral sex on production assistant Miriam Haley, was acquitted on the charge involving Kaja’s allegations. A mistrial was declared on a separate charge after the jury refused to continue deliberations. The judge has not yet scheduled sentencing as a defense motion to overturn the verdict is pending, with the next ruling expected on Jan. 8.
Kaja had previously criticized her sister’s testimony after it was used by Weinstein’s defense team. She has repeatedly accused Ewa of “personal betrayal” and, according to the lawsuit, of falsifying medical records and collaborating with Weinstein’s attorneys. These allegations are central to the defamation suit, which claims they caused significant professional harm.
The case remains ongoing, with both sides preparing for the court’s next hearing.
