Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano spews 1,400 feet of lava into the air in wild scene

Kilauea, Hawaii, Fires Up for 39th Time in 2025

The volcano that has been erupting almost continuously for the last decade finally started a new spell tonight, its 39th in the current year. The episode began at roughly 8:10 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time, the anniversary of the first recorded eruption of this season.

At the start, the U.S. Geological Survey’s real‑time feeds showed bursts of lava shooting up more than 1,400 feet from both the north and south vents. The flames and molten rock were so forceful that they generated a gas plume visible from orbit. “You can see, very subtly, the low‑level gas plume drifting to the southwest following low‑level winds and spreading to the southern part of the island,” the agency noted. “Higher‑level ash plume is much more obvious and reaches 20,000 feet. High‑level winds are carrying that material to the southeast.”

The eruption continued for about six hours, after which the volcano fell silent. “As of 2:13 a.m. HST, the volcano stopped erupting after a 6‑hour episode,” the USGS confirmed.

Kilauea is the youngest and most active volcano on the island of Hawai ‘i. For the past millennium it has covered almost 90 percent of its ground in lava flows, leaving only brief intervals of calm. The most recent major eruption earlier this month reached nearly 12 hours, while many previous episodes have lasted a day or less, separated by several‑day pauses.

Although the lava fountains slowed, the ash plume had still drifted over a hundred miles southeast before dissipating. The National Park Service continues to monitor the situation closely and urges visitors to stay away from the summit region until the activity settles.

The volcano’s consistent eruptions serve as a reminder of the dynamic nature of eastern Hawai ‘i’s shield volcanoes, and researchers remain vigilant as the 2025 season enters its ninth month.
