On Sunday, Mayor Eric Adams snapped back at Public Advocate Jumaane Williams after a playful social‑media post that implied the mayor might need to cede control of the city if he didn’t return soon.
Williams reminded everyone that the city charter says the public advocate takes over the mayor’s duties if the mayor is absent from New York for nine straight days. At that point, Adams had already been away for eight days, traveling to places like Israel, Albania, and Uzbekistan.
“We’re ready at City Hall just in case he decides to add another globetrotting stop—or his flight gets delayed a few hours,” Williams wrote in a tweet and posted a clip showing the public advocate “waiting” to step in.
Adams responded from the middle of his multi‑stop journey, posting, “One has to feel a bit bad watching a four‑year attempt to become Mayor by every means except winning over the voters finally crash and burn,” and added, “I genuinely hope you find some peace and happiness moving forward.”
The exchange is the latest in a pattern of barbed comments between the two rivals. After Adams was indicted earlier this year, Williams even called for him to resign at a rally.
Adams is set to leave office at the end of 2025 once Zohran Mamdani is elected, while Williams secured a second term as public advocate in November.
