A 51‑year‑old man was stabbed during the rush hour on a New York City subway train. The attack happened on Thursday morning on a D train traveling toward Brooklyn. At about 7:30 a.m., the strangers on the train fought, and after they disembarked at West 4th Street station, 30‑year‑old Justice Jackson, who is homeless and has a history of “emotionally disturbed” incidents, drove a knife into the victim’s back.
Emergency medical teams rushed the man to Bellevue Hospital, where doctors said he was stable. Jackson didn’t stay on the train; he hopped back on while police closed in. He was finally taken into custody around 1 p.m. on Friday. Police charged him with both felony and misdemeanor assault.
Jackson’s file shows near a dozen prior arrests, including several grand larceny schemes last July. City police have logged ten “emotionally disturbed” calls and more than a dozen other incidents involving him. He was hospitalized after his arrest, though the exact reason was not released.
The incident comes as New York City’s transit system records a small rise in felony assaults this year—453 in the first part of 2024 versus 445 in the same period last year—though overall felony crime on the rails has slipped about 4 percent, with 1,639 incidents compared to 1,706 a year ago.
