A Bronx mother named Karizma Dabeny fought her way to a neighbor’s door, shouting for help as her 12‑year‑old daughter was brutally attacked by her stepfather, police say. Witnesses say the man, Joshua Burnside, thrust a “tool” so far into the girl’s nose that the drill bit landed in her eye.
After the assault, Dabeny ran back and kicked her neighbor’s door in panic. “She was kicking my door and screaming, ‘Oh my God!’” one resident recalled, speaking anonymously. A second neighbor told the police that Dabeny had been stabbed earlier in the apartment and that the kids were still inside when the suspect wouldn’t let her back in.
Police tried to break the door but found it bolted shut. It wasn’t until officers pleaded with Burnside to open the door that he finally complied. “After the cops got him out and the ambulance was on the way, she said, ‘This is what I get for allowing him to see the kids.’” the neighbor added.
The boy‑friend, identified as the stepdad, was arrested on charges that include assault, child endangerment and weapons possession. Prosecutors expect the charges to rise to attempted murder. Burnside is living in a hospital and will face arraignment this coming Sunday.
The 12‑year‑old was rushed to Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center in Queens. Doctors removed the drill bit from her eye and performed surgery. She has since been stabilized, but her exact condition remains unreported.
The case has raised concerns about domestic violence and child safety in New York City’s Bronx borough. Authorities are urging anyone who knows of a dangerous situation to report it immediately.
