A family in Massachusetts had their plans for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner completely derailed when a delivery truck backed the wrong house. The driver from Fawcett Energy was supposed to drop off heating oil at a Malden address on Linwood Street, but instead ended up pumping the oil into a Medford home that shares the same street name just off the highway.
Because the Medford house had had its oil tank removed five years ago, there was no storage canister to stop the flow. As a result, roughly 385 gallons poured straight into the basement. The homeowner, Dan Nguyen, watched in disbelief as the delivery vehicle poured the liquid directly into a pipe that would normally feed a tank.
“I could smell something off室 and I went outside to see the person having the truck just pour, and it was coming right in my house,” Nguyen told NBC 10 Boston. Deputy Chief Nicholas Davis of the Medford Fire Department explained that the truck driver normally would hear a whistle when the oil tank starts to fill, but since there was no tank in this house, the tank’s usual safety signal never sounded.
Although the house had to be evacuated for hazardous fumes, Nguyen remained calm, saying, “Someone made a mistake, you know, sometimes they get the wrong address.” He later admitted to CBS News that the family had originally planned to host 20 guests for a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving. “I’m going to call tomorrow and cancel,” he said, accepting the inconvenience.
Nguyen’s brother, Tien, told NBC 10 Boston that the basement was “messed up” and they weren’t sure how long it would take before they could safely return. While the Home isn’t safe to live in, the family can stay with relatives for now, taking along the items they were able to salvage. The Red Cross has stepped in to provide temporary help.
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and local building inspectors have opened an investigation into the incident. The timeline for repairing the damaged structure remains uncertain, and the Post reached out to Fawcett Energy for comments.
