A hiker on Utah’s Mount Superior was rescued after spending several hours trapped on the South Ridge of Little Cottonwood Canyon.
Around 7 p.m., Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue received a call that a lone trail‑walker had gone “cliffed out.” The team says the hiker set out earlier that day, but a sudden snowstorm pushed him off the trail. As temperatures fell into the 20s and blowing snow cut visibility to just a few feet, the hiker called for help.
Search crews met at the base of Alta Ski Resort and sent two teams scrambling up the mountain from a nearby road. After almost a two‑hour climb, they found the stranded hiker, who was suffering from hypothermia. Rescue teams lifted him to a waiting ambulance, and he arrived at the hospital in stable condition. By midnight, all rescuers had returned to the valley.
That rescue was just one of several carried out over the weekend in the Wasatch‑Cache National Forest. A 31‑year‑old man and his three children went missing on Saturday while hiking near the Broad Fork Trails in Big Cottonwood Canyon. First responders found the family on Sunday morning. The adult is in fair condition, two children are in critical condition, and one child is stable. The search remains active.
Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue urges anyone heading into the wilderness to prepare carefully: always share your itinerary, travel in groups when possible, and bring at least ten essential items—water, a GPS, and sun protection. “Respect the wilderness and stay prepared,” the department reminds, stressing that even short hikes can turn dangerous if weather shifts abruptly.
