“India clear on its stance; PM Modi vocal about ending Russia-Ukraine conflict”: Dhruva Jaishankar

Dhruva Jaishankar, executive director of the Observer Research Foundation America, is pushing back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s accusation that India fuels the Russia-Ukraine war by buying Russian oil. In a recent interview with , Jaishankar highlighted how Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led calls for peace in the conflict.

“I think India has been very clear on that front,” Jaishankar told . “Prime Minister Modi has been one of the most vocal leaders calling for an end to the conflict, including in earlier meetings with President Putin.” He added that India’s decision to buy oil from various sources, including Russia, helps keep global oil prices stable while securing the country’s energy needs.

Trump made his comments during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he pointed to China and India as the main backers of the Ukraine war through their ongoing purchases of Russian oil. These remarks come as world leaders discuss regional conflicts like the Ukraine crisis.

The accusations tie into rising trade tensions between India and the U.S. In July, the Trump administration slapped a 25% tariff on Indian goods, despite ongoing talks for an interim India-U.S. trade deal. Just days later, they added another 25%, pushing the total to 50%—one of the highest rates worldwide. Officials cited India’s continued Russian oil imports as a key reason. These tariffs took effect on August 27.

India and the U.S. have held five rounds of negotiations for a broader trade agreement, but the sixth round, set for August, got postponed. The two countries are still working on an interim deal to ease these issues. India has raised concerns over U.S. demands to open its sensitive agriculture and dairy sectors, which support millions of livelihoods.

Earlier this year, in March, India and the U.S. kicked off talks for a balanced Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). They aim to wrap up the first phase by October or November 2025, focusing on fair terms that benefit both sides. As these India-U.S. trade talks continue, the debate over Russian oil imports and the Ukraine war remains a hot topic in global relations.
