India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Monday. The two leaders pledged to strengthen India-US ties and push for a free and open Indo-Pacific region, especially through the Quad alliance.
Their talks highlighted the key role of the bilateral relationship in building regional stability. Rubio thanked India for its active role in areas like trade, energy, and critical minerals. He stressed that India remains a top priority for the United States, praising New Delhi’s ongoing work on trade, defense, energy, pharmaceuticals, and critical minerals.
Both sides agreed to keep collaborating via the Quad, which brings together India, the United States, Australia, and Japan. The group aims to foster a secure, prosperous, and inclusive Indo-Pacific as a force for global good.
This meeting pushes back against doubts about the Quad’s strength, especially after recent strains in India-US relations. Tensions rose over U.S. tariffs on Indian goods, linked to India’s purchases of Russian oil. Still, efforts to rebuild the partnership are gaining momentum.
Rubio shared his thoughts on X, saying: “Met with Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar at UNGA. We discussed key areas of our bilateral relationship, including trade, energy, pharmaceuticals, and critical minerals, and more to generate prosperity for India and the United States.”
Jaishankar echoed the positive vibe on X: “Good to meet SecRubio this morning in New York. Our conversation covered a range of bilateral and international issues of current concern. Agreed on the importance of sustained engagement to progress on priority areas. We will remain in touch.”
