Rob Reiner’s son, Nick, who has long been battling addiction, shot his parents to death after a violent quarrel at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party last Saturday. The gathering turned chaotic when the younger cousin, known among insiders as a “nepo baby,’” “freaked out” and left the famous director terrified of what Nick might do next, according to friends who attended the event.
According to The Post, the family’s heated argument erupted when Nick, supposedly no longer using drugs, seemed to relapse after refusing yet another detox attempt—he’s had at least 17 rehab stints since he was 15. He allegedly kept asking people if they were famous, rattling the crowd and escalating tensions.
The fight took place less than a day before Nick allegedly slit his parents’ throats inside their Los Angeles mansion. A lifelong family friend who lives nearby told reporters that Rob had openly expressed fear about Nick’s deteriorating mental state, and that the conversation at Conan’s holiday party had been especially alarming.
“Nick was supposedly off drugs,” the friend said, but rumors suggested he was still deeply addicted to a mix of opiates and heroin at his lowest moments. Another neighbor, close to the Reiners, explained that the parents had pushed Nick to seek professional help, but he insisted on receiving treatment at home, a disagreement that had festered for years.
Rob, 78, famous for playing Michael “Meathead” Stivic on All in the Family and for directing cult hits such as Stand by Me and The Princess Bride, abruptly left the party with his photographer wife, Michele, 68, after the dispute. Their daughter, Romy, a 28‑year‑old magazine writer and aspiring actress, reportedly discovered the bodies.
When investigators were spoken to, Romy told them that her brother “should be a suspect” because he is “dangerous.” Nick was arrested hours later and charged with the murders. The Reiner household also includes their son Jake, 34, a former Houston TV reporter who hosted a Dodgers podcast, as well as their adopted daughter, Tracy Marshall Reiner, 61, who said she was “in shock” after the tragedy.
The last public appearance of the troubled son came in September, when he and his siblings walked the red carpet at the Spinal Tap II: The End Continues premiere. In interviews, Nick has admitted that he spent much of his life struggling with substance abuse, often ending up broke, homeless, and sleeping on the street, before finally seeking a path to recovery.
