Police in Des Moines, Iowa, arrested Tyler Pavlick, 32, Wednesday after officials found hidden cameras in portable restrooms. The devices recorded dozens of people, including children, at local events.
Pavlick faces seven counts of sexual exploitation of a minor for an act and three counts of invasion of privacy involving nudity. The Des Moines Police Department said he hid the cameras under toilet seats in porta‑potties.
One camera was discovered at the Harvest & Handmade Fair at Water Works Park on Oct. 4. Police say the device filmed unknowing adults and kids as they used the bathroom.
On Thursday, officials in Marshall County learned a similar camera had been installed at the Lincoln Valley Gold Course in State Center on Sept. 23. The location hosted a cross‑country meet for middle and high school students.
Lawyers say Pavlick set up the camera at 3:39 p.m. before the races and then left. A group of students or staff reported the unusual device. Police collected the camera and started an investigation.
Police interviewed witnesses and reviewed any available surveillance footage that could show who planted the cameras. They also dug into digital evidence that links Pavlick to both incidents.
Authorities added 36 more counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and 52 counts of privacy invasion. They also added a charge for sexual exploitation to promote film.
Pavlick is jailed in Polk County on a $100,000 bond. He will return to court next Monday to face the charges.
