The boyfriend of a young Ukrainian refugee who was fatally stabbed on a train by a repeat offender has publicly demanded a judge step up after court officials let the violent suspect escape on bail.
Stanislav Nikulytsia has drawn a direct comparison between the brutal killing of his girlfriend, 23‑year‑old Iryna Zarutska, in Charlotte, N.C., back in August, and the shocking attack on Bethany MaGee that occurred on a Chicago train on November 17.

In a recent Instagram story—linking to a local article about the Chicago incident—Nikulytsia expressed disbelief over the judge’s decision, saying, “72 prior arrests sounds like a joke. I guess 72 times was not enough to understand who he is.” He went on to criticize the lack of preventative measures, adding, “Why they always wait for them to do something like that to start doing something to prevent it.”

Zarutska, who fled war‑torn Ukraine in 2022 to live in the U.S., was stabbed to death while returning home from work. The suspect, Decarlos Brown Jr., a known criminal with 14 previous arrests, was charged with her murder shortly after the incident. He was released on a cashless bail in January, with Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes requiring a written promise to attend a future hearing.

Nikulytsia, who has been described as Zarutska’s “life partner,” also shared a video in which a right‑wing influencer blamed “horrible” judges for driving people toward vigilantism.

In Chicago, 50‑year‑old Lawrence Reed, a former criminal who had been released earlier that year after being accused of slapping a social worker, allegedly poured gasoline on Bethany MaGee and set her on fire while she rode a commuter train.

Cook County Judge Teresa Molina‑Gonzalez had previously released Reed on a separate assault case, though a prosecutor later called the electronic monitoring that was imposed “wholly insufficient.” Despite these criticisms, the judge insisted that she could not detain Reed. In speaking to prosecutor Jerrilyn Gumila, she said, “I understand your position, but I can’t keep everybody in jail because the state’s attorney wants me to, but I understand and respect your position.”
