India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called for big changes to the United Nations Security Council during his speech at the 80th UN General Assembly in New York. He pushed for expanding both permanent and non-permanent seats to make the council more representative, and he made it clear that India is ready to step up with greater responsibilities.
Jaishankar didn’t hold back on the UN’s growing credibility problems. He said resistance to reform is the main culprit, turning what should be progress into endless roadblocks. “Most members want change,” he noted, urging world leaders to cut through the cynicism and tackle the reform agenda head-on. He highlighted the need to fix historical injustices, especially toward Africa, as a key step forward.
A truly reformed UN Security Council would better reflect today’s world, Jaishankar argued. This comes amid ongoing debates on UN reform, where countries like India have long advocated for a bigger voice in global decisions.
Turning to India’s neighborhood, Jaishankar pointed out how the country has stepped in during tough times for its neighbors. From providing finance and food to fertilizers and fuel, India has responded quickly to urgent needs. “Turbulent times require us to step forward,” he said, emphasizing support in the region.
He also touched on the far-reaching effects of major conflicts, like those in Ukraine and Gaza. Even nations not directly involved are feeling the pain, from economic shocks to humanitarian crises. Jaishankar stressed that countries able to talk to all sides, including India, should help find solutions. “We call for an end to hostilities and will back any effort to restore peace,” he added.
Looking ahead, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to sharing its tech know-how with other countries to boost development. He spotlighted artificial intelligence (AI) as a game-changer with huge potential for growth worldwide. India’s plan? Use AI responsibly to improve lives and promote inclusion. That’s why India will host a global AI Summit in 2026, focusing on real impact for everyone.
