Former FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker—who had stepped down after Zohran Mamdani won the mayoral race—finally shared why he left. He explained that he had been put off by Mamdani’s socialist platform from the very beginning. In an interview that’s set to air this week on “CBS Mornings,” host Tony Dokoupil asked Tucker when he realized that the new mayor‑elect didn’t align with his own values. Tucker answered that the entire campaign made the incompatibility obvious. He pointed out that his faith played a role in the decision and that Mamdani still has work to do if he wants to earn the confidence of the city’s first‑responders. Tucker turned in his resignation to Mayor Eric Adams a few hours after Mamdani, a Muslim state legislator from Queens, defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the November 4 election. The incoming mayor’s democratic‑socialist agenda and his outspoken criticism of Israel have unsettled many in the Jewish community. Tucker will officially leave the FDNY on December 19, after a little more than a year in the position, and is expected to head back to his private security firm, T&M USA, a New York‑based company that was previously tied to Israel. Mamdani has repeatedly taken a hard line against Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, particularly following the Gaza uprising that followed the Hamas terror attack on October 7, 2023. Tucker’s appointment also drew scrutiny when it emerged that one of T&M’s major clients, a billionaire, had previously admitted connections to Chinese intelligence.
