Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has published a revealing new book, “Independent,” in which she says she did not expect Vice‑President Kamala Harris to win the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
Jean-Pierre told readers that, at the start of the campaign, she considered Harris’s chances thin because of the racism and sexism she had seen and felt inside the White House. “When I woke up, it was over. Harris had lost,” she writes. “I received calls from friends who were numb with disbelief. I never really believed Harris could win.”
The book chronicles Jean-Pierre’s decision to leave the Democratic Party, which she claims betrayed President Joe Biden. She criticises the party’s handling of Harris’s campaign, arguing it failed to protect a top candidate in a race that, in her view, “was not yet ready for a Black woman as president.”
Jean-Pierre also points to the 2024 election as a moment the United States was “just not there yet.” She notes that Trump was elected again, highlighting the party’s uneven standards and her frustration at how the Democrats let a “cage fight” among lawmakers sideline a strong candidate.
In interviews, Biden has echoed similar concerns about racism and sexism influencing voter perceptions, saying that it was the “sexist route” that hurt Harris’s bid. He insists Harris “was qualified to be president.”
Jean-Pierre calls for a future Democratic Party that better supports Black women and other marginalized candidates, who she believes have historically carried the movement’s momentum but are often overlooked.
The book adds fresh insight into the 2024 presidential race, the rise of Trump, and the ongoing debate about diversity and representation in American politics.
