In the wake of the shooting that killed conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, FBI Director Kash Patel found himself at the center of a bizarre incident in Utah. The story began when a group of retired and active‑fired agents reported that, on the day after the assassination, Patel refused to leave a commercial flight because he had no proper “raid jacket” to prove he was authorized to be on the plane. The officials were forced to hunt in the Salt Lake City field office for a suitable jacket, ultimately pulling one from a female agent’s kit. Patel claimed it was a women’s medium and had complained that the upper sleeves had no Velcro patches, a detail that was highlighted in the 115‑page report the post signed to cover the event.
The report also revealed that the agent who lent the jacket received patches from his own uniform, a move that drew criticism from the undercover team about the process. A long‑time source known only as “ALPHA 99” was cited as describing the whole incident.
A week later, after the report made its way to the press, a California Democrat named Eric Swalwell, who had previously worked with a woman known as “Fang Fang” (Christine Fang), one of the people suspected of spying for China, seized the opportunity to ridicule Patel. Swalwell took to X (formerly Twitter) to post:
> “I don’t mind that FBI Director Kash Patel had to wear a women’s (size medium) jacket to cosplay as someone in charge. I just wish he’d focus on stopping the rampant domestic terrorism happening on his watch.”
Patel responded not with an admission or denial but with a pointed snark:
> “I was looking for a Youth Large… Domestic terrorism arrests are UP 30% this year — impressive, considering I spent zero days dating a Chinese spy named Fang Fang, where should I send your women’s medium for date night?”
The exchange drew a backlash from other actors. Dan Bongino, the deputy director who the report labeled “something of a clown,” defended the FBI’s actions on X, posting the following tweet:
> “Anonymous sources from the Wray‑Comey era FBI are desperately trying to derail our reforms. We are not turning back. Kash and I are laser‑focused on keeping the Homeland safe, and on crushing violent crime. We’ve sent the murder rate to a historic low, and we’ve doubled the amount of violent crime arrests from prior years.”
Meanwhile, the 115‑page document described the FBI as a “rudderless ship” and called out the agency’s leadership as “all f–ked up.” It also mentioned that the organization had mishandled investigations into Kirk’s death, giving credit for the progress to other law‑enforcement bodies instead of to their own agents.
The report was released just days after former President Trump’s White House defended the FBI and called the allegations “baseless.” Since then, Pattel has largely remained silent on the findings, while Bongino has fought back against the report’s coverage and cited the agency’s continuing commitment to reforms and public safety.
