The La Mesa Police Department in Southern California is mourning the loss of one of its own. Officer Lauren Craven was 25 when she died on the evening of Monday, Oct. 20, after taking a stand to help at a highway crash.

Craven was on her way back to the precinct in La Mesa from a visit to the San Diego Central Jail when she spotted an accident on eastbound Interstate 8 at Fairmont Avenue. She stepped out of her car to assist the other driver, but a second motorist struck her as she was helping. The impact was fatal, and the officer was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tragedy also claimed the life of a 19‑year‑old man named De’Veonte Morris, who was involved in the same collision. Four others were injured, and one remained hospitalized after authorities closed in on the scene.

Local police chief Ray Sweeney spoke at a press conference later that night. “This is a very tragic situation,” he said. “My heartfelt condolences go to the La Mesa Police Department, our fellow law‑enforcement colleagues, and to the families of all those affected.”

The California Highway Patrol is now investigating the original crash that set the chain of events in motion. Officers and emergency crews worked quickly to clear the highway and provide medical help.

The La Mesa Police Department released a statement on Facebook that highlighted Officer Craven’s dedication, describing her as “tenacious, courageous, and compassionate.” The department noted that her actions on that fateful night exemplified her commitment to community safety and that she will be remembered for her self‑less service.

Memorials and moments of silence have already followed for Craven at the department’s headquarters. Residents of La Mesa have come to pay their respects, leaving flowers and notes in her memory.

Law‑enforcement officials and community members will hold the officer’s family—her parents, sister, and partner—in their thoughts as they continue to process the loss of a young professional who dedicated his life to protecting others.
