LA mom orders driverless Waymo taxi for daughter, finds man hiding in trunk claiming ‘the people’ trapped him: video
A Waymo driverless ride that was booked for a young girl turned into a bizarre scene when the mother discovered a nervous-looking man tucked into the car’s trunk. The clip, which went viral on TikTok, sparked a fresh round of complaints about the safety standards of the autonomous taxi company.
In the footage the mother can be heard shouting, “Why the f–k are you in the trunk?!” The startled man tried to explain that “This s–t won’t let me out,” and when she asked why he was there, he muttered that “They put me in here.” When she pressed him further, he said simply, “The… the people.”
Police eventually removed the man from the vehicle, according to a follow‑up video posted by the mother‑daughter pair. While speaking with a Waymo representative, the woman was told that she would receive a credit for a future ride.
Many viewers were stunned that the robotaxi, equipped with numerous interior cameras, had failed to flag the stowaway. Comments ranged from “Doesn’t Waymo have like 30 cameras inside the car?” to “Literally saw a video where they squeezed an extra person and the Waymo said they had cameras and it wouldn’t move until they got out, and so how is this overlooked???” and “Everybody has to stop using these Waymo cars. Way too risky for so many reasons.”
Waymo, an Alphabet‑owned subsidiary, responded that its support team had reached out to the passenger to confirm her safety. A spokesperson said, “We’re committed to keeping our riders safe and earning the trust of the communities where we operate. This experience was unacceptable, and we are actively implementing changes to address this.”
This incident follows a series of other high‑profile mishaps, including a Waymo autonomous vehicle striking a beloved bodega cat in San Francisco, protests in Los Angeles where some activists targeted the vehicles, and complaints in New York about illegal U‑turns and awkward navigation through tight tunnels.
