New York’s top law‑enforcer, Attorney General Letitia James, faces new federal charges that tie her house in Norfolk, Virginia, to a long‑running criminal case.
James’s grand‑niece, 36‑year‑old Nakia Thompson, has been living with her kids at the Virginia home since 2020. Thompson has a history of police‑related offenses. In 2011, she was arrested in Winston‑Salem, North Carolina, for assaulting police officers and resisting a public officer. She served no more than 60 days after pleading guilty and then quietly moved to Virginia.
Now, prosecutors say Thompson fled North Carolina to evade her parole obligations and is being looked for by that state’s Department of Corrections. The indictment alleges James lied on a mortgage application, claiming the Norfolk house was a second home that she would not rent out when, in reality, it had paying tenants. The charges paint a picture of mortgage fraud and deception, linking the home to a fugitive with a criminal record that includes multiple assault counts and a title‑less driver citation.
Officials confirmed that Thompson jumped the state line with her three children before the court could get her back. The North Carolina Department of Corrections says she is the only absconder on this “non‑extraditable” case, meaning she faces arrest and a possible re‑instatement of her suspended sentence should she be caught.
The investigation now centers on whether James knowingly accommodated a fugitive and used the house for illegal activity. If the federal case proceeds, it could lead to serious consequences for the New York Attorney General and underscore how a state official’s personal actions can become a federal crime.
