Luigi Mangione, dressed in a gray blazer over a white‑and‑red checkered shirt, entered the Manhattan courtroom for a crucial pretrial evidence session in the murder case against him.
The 27‑year‑old Ivy League alumnus was ushered from a side entrance and took a seat at the defense table as the week‑long proceeding began.
Prosecutors plan to call more than two dozen witnesses who were involved in Mangione’s arrest back in December, after he allegedly struck the chief executive of UnitedHealthCare on a Midtown sidewalk.
The hearing will examine whether police violated Mangione’s rights by questioning him and searching his backpack before obtaining a warrant.
Should Judge Gregory Carro side with the defense, the prosecutors could be barred from showing jurors the key evidence found in the backpack, including the alleged murder weapon and a notebook in which Mangione supposedly explains his motive.
In court papers, the accused states he intended to “rebel against the deadly, greed fueled health insurance cartel” by targeting Thompson, the head of a company that “literally extracts human life force for money.”
Mangione also faces separate federal charges, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty—a rare request.
While in custody, he is allowed to wear one of two suits, three shirts, or three sweaters, rather than the standard inmate scrubs, according to court records.
