Luigi Mangione’s prostitute ‘Pokémon’ joke months before NYC shooting

A handful of unusual details popped up in the story of Luigi Mangione, the man arrested for shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City. The same guy who, months earlier, joked in Osaka that he’d try to pay a mob boss with “pornstar Pokémon” cards is now facing a severe criminal case that could lead to the death penalty.

Why the Pokémon joke matters

When Mangione traveled through Japan, Thailand, and India, reporters mentioned a conversation in Osaka where he laughed about trading valuable Pokémon cards instead of yen to put down a deal. It shows a man who was ready to do strange—and illegal—things long before the shooting.

The New York crime

On December 4, 2024, surveillance video recorded a hooded gunman walking up behind UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a shareholder conference in Manhattan and firing multiple shots. Thompson, a father of two, died from the injuries. The shooter was caught in a nearby parking lot in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days later.

Arrest and charges

Mangione was taken into custody in Altoona while police found a handgun and a manifesto targeted at the health‑insurance industry. He now faces:

  • Federal charges of interstate stalking, use of a firearm to commit murder, and second‑degree murder — a charge that can carry a death penalty.
  • New York state charges that could lead to life imprisonment.

Current status

Mangione has already appeared before a Manhattan judge as the investigation continues. Law enforcement is warning business leaders that the threat of targeted violence has risen, citing this case as a stark example.

If convicted, the federal killer could be sentenced to death, or potentially spend the rest of his life behind bars in New York. The case has sparked debate about security for corporate executives and the growing trend of politically motivated violence.
