A tragic shooting in Pinson, Alabama, left high‑school cheerleader Kimber Mills, 18, dead after a bonfire party turned violent.
The incident occurred early Sunday night in a wooded area known locally as “The Pit.” According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, 27‑year‑old Steven Tyler Whitehead entered the gathering around 12:24 a.m. and fired several shots during a verbal and physical altercation. Whitehead is now charged with three counts of attempted murder and is being held on a $180,000 bond.
Kimber was a senior at Cleveland High School and planned to attend the University of Alabama in 2026, where she hoped to become a nurse. She was struck in the head and leg, and, despite emergency care, died at UAB Hospital.
Family members released a Facebook post that evening, describing Kimber as “a sweet baby sister‑like” and noting her bright personality. Her sister, Ashley Mills, said Kimber had had “too much trauma to her brain” and that a “DNR” order had been placed, reflecting the decision to honor her wishes in the face of severe injuries.
A friend who was present at the party, Silas McCay, was shot ten times—thrown through a hip, ribcage, stomach, and other areas—while attempting to protect his friends. McCay is expected to recover and is already out of the hospital, possibly leaving as early as Friday.
Whitehead’s alleged motive and how the confrontation escalated remain under investigation. Prosecutors have said the suspect was trying to talk to Kimber before the fight, but they did not provide further motive. The case is still pending.
Local police and hospital staff continue to deal with the fallout of this violent event, while the community mourns a promising student whose life was cut short.
