A Brooklyn man was taken into custody Thursday after a shocking assault on two children in New York City’s High Line park.
The suspect, 32‑year‑old Rammy Lopez, allegedly struck a 7‑year‑old boy while he walked with his 3‑year‑old sister and a babysitter. Police say the attacker used a phone to hit the boy in the mouth and jaw. Moments later a 2‑year‑old girl, sitting beside her father, was slapped as well. The incident left the toddler with bruising, redness and swelling.
Police arrived on the scene at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. The babysitter kept the boy calm and called his mother, who rushed over from Brooklyn. The mother told reporters the boy was crying and felt a loose tooth, but was not seriously hurt. “It’s scary,” she said. “We can’t protect them against everything.”
Lopez fled the area after the attacks, but New York police tracked him down in Brownsville on Thursday morning. He was arrested and charged with two counts of felony assault. Sources describe him as “emotionally disturbed.” He had previously been arrested in late August on forcible‑touching charges in Manhattan and was released on recognizance during that arraignment.
The police response was praised by the boy’s mother: “The police were excellent. They made us feel confident they’d find him, and they did.” She added that more support is needed for people who relapse onto the street, arguing, “We should do better at getting them the mental help they need.”
The High Line, a popular elevated park in Manhattan, has seen increasing incidents of public safety concern. This case highlights the urgency of protecting children on city streets and the importance of swift police action in preventing further harm.
