A 53‑year‑old staff member at Meadowridge Academy in Swansea, Massachusetts, died after a 14‑year‑old student kicked her in the chest while the teacher tried to keep the teen from leaving the dorms without permission.
Amy Morrell, a Rhode Island native who had worked at the residential therapeutic school for nearly a decade, was with her colleague when the confrontation started. The school’s mandate is to care for young adults ages 12 to 21 who face mental‑health, behavioral and trauma‑related challenges, and the incident occurred just outside the classroom.
When the teen tried to escape, Morrell and another employee intervened. The student kicked Morrell in the chest, sending her to the floor. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but succumbed to her injuries the next day. Her cause of death is still under investigation.
The juvenile, whose identity has not been released, was charged with assault and battery, causing serious bodily injury. The case is being handled in Fall River Juvenile Court. Prosecutors say the investigation is ongoing and further details will be added as the case progresses.
Meadowridge Academy officials expressed deep sorrow. “We are deeply saddened by Amy’s passing,” the school said. The spokesperson added that students and staff can access support services while the community grieves this tragic loss.
Friends and family of Morrell describe her as a dedicated educator who loved her work and the students she helped. One close friend, who grew up with her, said he was shocked to hear about the tragedy, while another reflected on how the incident “ruined the child’s life” and left the teacher’s life ended in an instant.
