Melania Trump made a surprising announcement in the White House foyer on Friday. She told reporters that she has kept an “open channel” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and that the talks helped reunite eight Ukrainian children with their families.
The former fashion model said she wrote a letter to Putin that was delivered during the August 15 meeting in Alaska with the Russian leader. Since then, she said, the two have exchanged multiple messages and even held “back‑channel” meetings and calls.
“We’ve had an open line of conversation,” Trump explained. “My representative has been working directly with Putin’s team to bring children back to their parents.”
According to her, eight children have already been returned in the last 24 hours—including one who had been taken to Russia from Ukraine. She added that plans are already in motion to reunite more kids.
The comments came as part of a private briefing at the White House, and appear to spotlight a rare cooperation between the U.S. and Russia over a humanitarian issue.
